Media maybe? People constantly looking for quick ways to lose weight without having to put forth an effort no matter what health risks there are?
I think as we progress as a whole we lose more common sense. I look around me at school and wonder just to what extremes some of these girls are going to just to stay thin because there is no way they would be that transparent with regular exercise. I mean, you'd build some muscle, right? My conclusion would have to be they're taking diet pills or have an eating disorder.
A cause might be because of the media. Women now a days are assaulted with ads and such that say "Hey! You there! You need to look like this [insert skeleton]!" either directly or indirectly. Shows and movies constantly show drop-dead gorgeous men and women and that's got to have some sort of affect on a person's view of themself.
How do we achieve that look? Pills/shakes.
Most of the time people are "too busy" to work out or eat right, so why not take a simple and "harmless" pill or shake to do the work for you? The advertisements don't help either. They show people who've lost weight supposedly using their product and didn't have to work out, or did very little exercise. (Oh, wouldn't that be great!) They don't bother putting in any possible side effects and whatnot.
My sister constantly looks at that stuff with a "I need that" gaze. When we watch a movie I can see that she's like "wish I had a body like that" and I must admit, I think that too, but she wants to go down the Hydroxycut route (to which I will vehemently tell her no).
I just found something too. Not sure if it really applies or not, but it's a good read anyways I think.

Maybe that's why it's almost all right to get bombarded with ads for diet aids. Because suddenly everyone was overweight or obese.
Sorry for the rant. |
